West Bend Mutual Insurance donates $25,000 to Miracle League of Dane County
Funding will help build baseball field for kids with physical and/or cognitive disabilities
West Bend, WI – West Bend Mutual Insurance has donated $25,000 to the Miracle League of Dane County, helping the organization exceed its goal of $420,000 to build a Miracle League Baseball Field in Cottage Grove, WI for children with physical and/or cognitive disabilities.
The playing field, which will be located in Cottage Grove’s Bakken Park, is expected to be completed by early spring with Opening Day festivities and games being planned for late May or the first week of June.
“As the Miracle League’s slogan indicates, everyone deserves a chance to play baseball, and West Bend Mutual Insurance is thrilled to be able to help make it a reality in Dane County and the surrounding area,” said Jim Schwalen, senior vice president marketing and personal lines at West Bend Mutual Insurance.
The Miracle League of Dane County expects to have 80 to 90 kids participating in games in 2021 with up to 150 kids by 2022, said Bill Schultz, the league’s founder and executive director. The field will feature rubberized turf so children with wheelchairs, walkers, or difficulty walking can experience the game with the help of “buddies” (volunteers who help each child hit, throw, field, and score a run).
“West Bend Mutual Insurance is a wonderful partner to have on this project. Their support will help hundreds of kids and their families experience the joys of playing baseball and camaraderie of others,” Schultz said.
Most of the ball field’s first phase of construction has been completed, including excavating and grading in addition to pouring the concrete base over which the rubberized field surface will be installed. Plans call for fencing, which will include a backstop, to be installed by the end of the month. Dugouts, spectator bleachers, a video scoreboard, and park benches will be installed in the spring.
