Everything you wanted to know about the behind the scenes reasons to a career choice in the industry!
Four questions that highlight the passion for Auto, Home, Business, Property and Life Insurance and three varying responses to them!
Question: No matter how long any insurance agent has been in the business, there was always a time when he or she was a rookie. Can you remember what prompted you to begin a career in indemnity?
Answer 1: Actually, my exposure to the industry came out of my very own requirements. I was personally searching for auto coverage. The problem was that every agency I turned to offered very expensive premiums. It was only after I mentioned this to some of my college mates that I found a differing approach. I was guided a specific agency that showed a level of customer service that seemed unique. They showed an honest interest in me, sat me down to a discussion about my particular situation and searched their wide network of providers to give me a tailored plan at a competitively low rate. It was then that I decided this was what interested me in a profession.
Answer 2: I was actually in the market for a job when a good friend who had just passed the state insurance test, suggested the idea for me. At first, I scoffed at the prospect. After I met the agency head where he worked, things changed. I was so impressed with the 'happening place' that I became open to this as a career choice.
Question: What form of training went into becoming an insurance agent?
Answer 1: As for anyone interested in this field, I had to attend classes on the subject matter. This culminated in a test, after which I received my insurance license. I have to admit, though, that without the on-site training I received from the agency that took me on, I would not be as knowledgeable, nor as skilled. It is a training that does not end in the initiation process. To this day, I can honestly say that I can rely on my superiors for backup training in all aspects of the field.
Answer 2: The training for me incorporated a licensing course, written examinations and on-the-job training.
Question: What part of the job astonished you the most?
Answer 1: Coming from being on the sidelines of insurance as a client, I did not realize to the full extent the importance of having an honest agent that could direct you through the maze of insurance.
Answer 2: Before getting into the industry, I had no idea how vital insurance is in all facets of life!
Question: Any advice to give others who might be considering becoming an insurance agent?
Answer 1: Undoubtedly, the beginnings are difficult. If you have a reliable agency on your back though, and you give it your all, chances are you will be successful!
Answer 2: If anyone tells you the industry is flooded, don't listen! Invest in the effort. Gain the trust of your clients by being honest and straightforward and you will reap the results!
