The term cybercrime is not defined in any law in India but there is one legislation which deals with the matters related to such crimes is INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY ACT, 2000  

These kind of acts are the combination of crime and computer. So, it can be said that, when in commission of any offence computer and internet is used, these offences are categorized as “cybercrimes”.

Major focus of IT act is on data privacy, information security as well as on other illegal use of or by the computer . Data theft, money laundering, sending offensive messages, stealing electronic signature ,, using identity of other person as well as using the password of any other person are also covered as cyber -crimes and are punishable.  Offences like child pornography and cyber terrorism were also included in the forms of cybercrimes. Publishing obscene material through media is also a part of cyber -crime . Cyber terrorism has been made heinous cyber -crime and has been defined in the widest possible terms and made punishable with imprisonment which may extend to imprisonment for life and heavy fine can be imposed.

To conclude it can be said that, it has been provided in the preamble of the Information Technology Act 2000 that this act was passed in order to give legal recognition for transactions done through electronic means and to make it safer for the users. This act in a way has characterised the cybercrimes, which were earlier unknown to general public in India and which is also very useful to know. Today, we have safer ways to use the computer for our personal purpose and much security is provided to the entire technical world.
